Volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajøkull, South Iceland

last night an eruption of the volcano Eyjafjallajøkull started. around 500 people have been evacuated from the area and most planes flying over iceland have been cancelled.

the eruption site is between two glaciers and therefore the chances of jøkulhlaup (catastrophic flooding) is not that great. but this can all change...

the eruption rift is about 1 km long ( vestmannaeyja in 1973 was 2 km long) and the magma came up to 100 m up in the air.

the two pictures are taken by RAX from www.mbl.is

Wow!!

I was lucky enough on a plane from Denmark to Iceland that flew low over the ocean when Surtsey was forming. I will look for more photos of this eruption!

Keep going on the thesis, you'll do well I'm sure.
