So this is how a volcano works...

So this is how volcanologists work...

nothing much is going on at the eruption site, a little bit of magma is melting some ice, but is not making to much trouble. the airports here have been closed on and off, which is hard for Icelandair and the tourist business...

i have two more days to finish my thesis...

writing and writing

i am in my final stage of writing my thesis. i have to hand it in to my supervisors on Monday, 3rd of May. then they will spend some time on it before i get it back and probably make some addjustemnts before handing it in finally may 17th...

flight traffic is back to normal at keflavik and reykjavik.
my friend Hilmer who has stayed with me for the last 3 days, left for Greenland today as he has been stopped by the volcaic ash.
he still misses his luggage...

Friday 23 April 2010

our turn...

today it was our turn to close down airports...
Keflavik and Reykjavik closed down at hrs 0600, but Akureyri in the north and eigilsstadir in the east are open for traffic, and some planes have been routed to Akureyri. which is good for business there;0)
the ash cloud is moving towards reykjavik, but the amount is nothing close to what has been pouring over the farmers down south.

well i am off to continue writing on my thesis...

overview of the eruption seen from NASA satellite April 17th

My glacier will have to change name from Sólheimajökull to Svartijökull = sunny glacier to black glacier

i put some more photos on "my pictures"

these pictures are compared from satellite images taken by NASA on the EO-1 and ASTER bands, the white one is from April 6th. and the black one from April 17th. these show that most of my glacier has been covered in ash by the second eruption (Eyjafjallajökull), but was untouched by the first eruption (Fimmvörduháls).

so suddenly i have some more things i can add to my thesis...it will be exciting to see how this ash layer will affect the melting during this summer...

Tuesday 20 April 2010

thickness of ash layer

this evening scientist said that the thickness of ash is between 4 and 5 cm on the area below Eyjafjallajøkull.
the area is not more than a few km to each side of thorvaldseyri farm.
if the layer would be more than 10 cm then it would be serious for the farmers and it would maybe take 100 years before the earth would be 100% fertile again...

weather in reykjavik has been sunny, rainy, snowy, sleet and rain again, but we have not gotten any ash this way.
my thesis is going well, producing some words and some figures. but there is still some more work that has to be done;0)

vidoe from the volcanic eruption...

here is a link to my video of the eruption on youtube:0) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oxtzqj4M6tQ

my glacier should change name...

my glacier should change name from Sólheimajökull to Svartijökull (black glacier);0)

yeasterday i had a really good day in "school" writing 2000 words, autorecovery svae worked fine, but when i wanted to do the final save word and my pc refused to do so. i tried everything but in the end i lost yesterdays work... so pissed off i have to do it all over again today, hopeing i will remember most of it...

my own pictures...

these pictures were taken last night. Anna, her two sisters and I decided to drive to Hvolsvøllur and take some pictures. the weather was calm, sunny and crisp cool temperatures, making the possibilities good for photography.
unfortunately there wasn´t as much lightning in the volcano as expected, but i still got some shots.
we came back to Reykjavik around 0100 hrs.

the volcano has been pouring out ash and steam for some days now, it doesn¨t really look like the volcano is loosing its momentum. it is quite scary to watch the huge amounts of ash pouring down on the other side of the mountain, knowing farmers and animals and fertile soil is being mistreated...

there are more photographs on "my pictures"

this radar image taken by TF-SIF the icelandic coast-guard shows three wholes in the glacier where the eruption has broken/melted the ice away...

a plane from the coast guard is on its way to find out where...

time series: first the old one started- then a new crack opened and the old one stopped- then yeasterday everything aad seased but last night evrything started again this time beneath the glacier

Easter hollidays

this easter we rented a cottage at lake myvatn in northern Iceland, 100 km east of Akureyri. we, Anna, Theo, Gunna, Malin, Bjørn and I had a great time there. really good weather, spectacular northern lights, skiing at Krafla ( skilift broke down though) and skiing in Akureyri yesterday in cloudy weather.
the drive home yesterday was the least to say demanding with a lot of really bad weather with snow and wind. some places we didn't see more than a few metres so it was hard finding our way home. arrived in RVK at 0200 hrs tired and happy after a long drive home, but many experiences richer and good memories...

flying for the second time...

my friend Bjørn from Swiss is visiting me and he has a pilot license. in order to let him and Anna see the volcanic eruption from the air we rented a small plane, a Cessna and flew out and had a wee look. it was great to be able to see it for all of us, and for me it was the second time...

only a few hours after our arrival in RVK a new crack opened and magma was pouring out of it...

more photos on my pictures!
