right now the weather is crazy in the volcanoe area and the forecast for tomorrow isn¨t much better, so mayby something exciting will have happened when the weather clears up...
alomost everyone in school drove to the area to see the eruption, but i stayed at home with my master thesis...and i saw no reason to go there when the weather was bad (i want good conditions and great pictures) and the eruption small (i want bigger)
the reason for the sudden cloud rising to 1 km height is not gases but melted snow (water) flowing into the hot magma and this is therefore steam.
the water level in the river also rose suddenly and temperature went from +1 to +7 in a very short time, but lowered quickly again.

Volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajøkull, South Iceland
last night an eruption of the volcano Eyjafjallajøkull started. around 500 people have been evacuated from the area and most planes flying over iceland have been cancelled.
the eruption site is between two glaciers and therefore the chances of jøkulhlaup (catastrophic flooding) is not that great. but this can all change...
the eruption rift is about 1 km long ( vestmannaeyja in 1973 was 2 km long) and the magma came up to 100 m up in the air.

a lake to be formed underneath my glacier....
a lake is probably to be formed if and when my glacier has retreated 3 more km inland. this will be between 110 and 60 m deep, 2.5 km long and maybe 400 m wide. more ice radar measurements have to be done to establish the correct size of theis "lake", but i don¨t have that equipment...
i am not very active on my blog these days, just working with my thesis that i have to hand in to my supervisors on may 3rd...

it is hard to be a Geologist...
Today i am presenting my work for the rest of the Geology department in a power point presentation. it has taken some time to put it together but it is also helpfull in my further work of writing the thesis. i have to turn in the thesis by the 17th f May, so it is getting less and less time... i think i am in good progress, but still better to speed it up a bit now than in the end. there is light at the end of the tunnel...

Back from Boston
Anna and I came back from a good trip to Boston Tuesday morning. the weather on the trip was not very good, but we managed to have a good time in Boston. while we stayed in Boston the whole east coast had really bad weather, with snow, rain and strong winds, but we only got bits of it.
during our stay we walked a lot. it was a good way to see the city and all the historical sites and get a better appetite;0)
people were really friendly and helpfull and you always felt welcome and secure where ever we went. i think we saw most of the city and the suroundings on our walks, makin us pretty tired in the afternoons. then the hotel was a good place to relax for a few hours before we went out for some chow...
on our last day we tried the sub way, which worked really well (why did we do all this walking???) and went up to Harvard, which was a really nice place, busy place with students everywhere, nice shops and coffehouses and old beautifull histroical buildings. no i can say i went to Harvard;0)
we didn't do that much shopping, some clothes and some outdoor gear. most sotres are clothing and fashion, i needed some more outdoor stores and some electronic stores!
we had a hard time getting used to state taxes being added to everything as well as tips, something we Europeans aren't used to. we se a price and that is what we pay. the states wasn't that cheap either...
altogether a good trip to Boston
