Oslo

Today i arrived in Oslo, Norway. Yesterday it was snowing a lot inReykjavik, so it was a pitty to leave when there is finally some snow around. Tomorrow i will fly to Svalbard to attend an interview, but will be back in Oslo on Tuesday to help my parents moving to a new (old) house. then i will go back to Anna and Iceland on the 20th of February.
the weather here in Oslo is the same as in Reykjavik, -2 and some snow on the ground, but a lot more lighter...

NVG flying

Last evening I was lucky to be invited out flying with the Icelandic Coast-Guard in the Super Puma helicopter. the aim of the excises was to train recovery of people (wooden cross) in heavy seas outside Keflavik, in darkness. we mounted NVG (night vision goggles) on our helmets, giving us the ability to see in darkness. the difference is really big and a must for doing rescue operations in the dark. i got a place in the front of the "bird" with the pilots giving me a great view of everything going on. on our way back we hovered approximately 30 m over ground and i was lowered down by the use of a hoist and pulled up again, rotating around my own axes due to the spinning effect. it was fun to experience and to see how the team operates.

APPROVED

Yesterday I was told that my master thesis had been APPROVED, so now I am a very happy man!
What is left is to make a good presentation of my thesis, which is to be hold on January 31st.
Then it is officially over and I can turn another page in the chapter of my life...

Skiing at Akureyri

Friday afternoon Anna and some of our friends from the recue team drove up to Akureyri, North Iceland to go skiing. There is almost no snow in Reykjavik and tons in Akureyri. It is a very long drive on winter conditions. It is 380 km but it took us seven hours with breaks to get there on slippery roads. We had rented an appartment down-town for the cheap price of 9000 IS. Saturday and some hours of Sunday was spent in the ski resort of Akureyri. The snow conditions were perfect and we had great weather with temperatures between +2 and -8 and absolutely no wind. We ended both days by going to the swimming-pool to loosen up sore muscles and relax. Saturday we had a big dinner with lamb legs and a good desert of, ice-cream, bananas, strawberries and cream. Anna and I met one of Annas friends on a coffee-house before driving home to Reykjavik, which took  6 hrs 20 min including stops.

MASTER thesis

this morning at hrs 0550 i handed in my master thesis to my sensor and my supervisors. it is 99 pages and 23 727 words. now it is up to my sensor if it is good enough to pass;0)

i have re-written it 3 times, which takes a lot of time, but it is good to be finished so i can relax a bit and go skiing up north this week-end...

Here in Reykjavik it is nice and cold, but absolutely no wind...
 Some people still think it is New Years eve;0)
